California birder spots Appledore gull (in Massachusetts)

Alvaro Jaramillo, Senior Biologist at the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory, spotted a banded Great Black-backed Gull on October 4 at Nauset Beach, Cape Cod, MA.

Alvaro managed to get an amazingly clear shot of the  band while the bird was taking off!

“6F3” was banded as a chick on July 9, 2009 and this is the first reported observation of the bird since the end of the 2009 breeding season.

Coincidentally, Alvaro was one of the three people who first reported the Lesser Black-backed Gull overwintering at Daytona Beach Shores, FL in January 2009.   He was in the Boston area to give a talk when he spotted 6F3.  He says, “Since I don’t get to see Great BB here in California I was paying special attention to them while I was out there and low and behold one is color banded! I figured it must be one of your birds. ”  Alvaro also says that he’ll be visiting Florida again in January this year and will be on the lookout for more banded birds.

Thanks so much for the report, Alvaro!  Hope to hear more from you this Winter.
